In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

1. For the title of our film, we chose to use a black background to connote horror and suspense, the dark background also works well with the font that we chose. We decided to use a slightly faded font so that it looks slightly creepy.

2.This shows the location of our opening scene. it is dark and very secluded. it fits in with the stereotype of being in a place that makes you feel alone and venerable.

3.This shows our usage of props and costume. This is a very important part of any film because it shows the audience what type of characters there are. The man driving the car is wearing a suit because he is a teacher, this is very important to get across early on because it is a vital part of the film.

4. This is one of our edits in the opening shots. It is a cross fade, the fade makes the transition between shots smother and a lot less sudden. Camera work:

5. The font of our titles in the title sequence is a very plain font. It is 'Times New Roman' in white because it contrasts with the dark and grainy scenes of the title sequence. It also shows that we are serious. The font that we used for the title of the film 'A School's Nightmare' is very Gothic looking, it also looks like it is covered in blood which is perfect for our genre.

6. We needed an initial start point for the teacher being haunted by a ghost, so decided that the best idea was him running over one of his student. The opening building up to a peak just before the opening scene where everything then calms down again. From then on it, the characters within the film would have their story lines built upon.

7. The whole opening uses a dark effect to make the shots look gloomy. It is also completely set way from anything, this suggests the genre as horror it is very mysterious. It also shows the blood which is very stereotypical of horror.

8.The first characters introduced are four teenagers as they walk down a road together, talking and eventually splitting up. This is very casual which is a contrast to how the other character is introduced, the other character is first seen in multiple fast car shots and then a car crash.

9. We mainly only used two different types of edits, fades and a darkening filter. The darkening filter had to be used on every shot to make it look more gloomy and dark. The fades were used to make the shots flow together and look smooth.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

We have compared Jon, to Billy, a boy of similar age from the film 'Jeeper Creeper 2'. We chose to compare Jon to him as similarly he dies in a horror film very early on.
We also compared them because they are of the same height and they are both wearing a white shirt, this shows there innocence.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

We established a target audience for our horror film from studying other films audiences and from sending out a survey. We discovered that the main age group that watches horror films is in the 16-24 age range, so we aimed our film to meet the right criteria.

Survey:We created a short survey for people to fill in on our two minute extract. We made it to see what peoples reactions were on it and to see if they liked it or not. The survey was answered by a group of year 13 students, this was perfect because they fitted perfectly into our target audience.

Demographics:Age-16-24
Gender-Mainly male, but some females may enjoy it
Geographical location-A general built up area, like a city
Class-Working or middle class

Psychographics:We have mainly aimed our film at teenagers and young adults because we believe that they will be able to relate to the characters and some of the situations. The first few opening sense have to be both gripping and full of suspense to make sure that the audience is actively watching. The music has to be compelling and the plot and location has to be believable to create the maximum amount of believability.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

This is the Mac that we used for our editing. It was very useful to have the Mac because it runs faster and has more up to date software.

This is an image of the final cut software that we used.

And this is a close up of our time line, a lot of work was put into this because we wanted it to flow smoothly and look professional.

This is the camera and tripod that we used. Having the tri-pod made filming a lot easier because we could get smooth pans.

The Final Cut software that we used was of a much greater quality compared to Adobe Premiere Pro. It allowed us to change the light levels in each shot if necessary, this was a very useful feature that we made good use of.

Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Looking back at when we made our preliminary task, my ability and understanding of media terminology and camera work had dramatically increased.

The preliminary task contained very simplistic camera work and only showed our ability to use basic shot types. The preliminary task was mainly used to show our understanding of 'shot reverse shot', the '180' rule, 'match on action' and 'reverce shot'. When it came to editing, it was very basic and we only utilised the face effect.

When we were filing our film, we used a larger range of shot types and camera angles to make it look more professional. Our usage of the before mentioned shots had also improved greatly showing our understanding of camera techniques. Also, when it came to editing our film, we had better software available, so our editing was of a much higher quality. This has improved the over all quality of our film because we were able to change allot of things in post production.

Filming style

The filming style of for our film will be typical of horror and most Hollywood films. This is simply done with a mixture of angles and movements.

We also decided that during the editing process we were going to darken the shots by adding filter effects from 'Final Cut Studio'.

Music

Choosing music for our film was very difficult, we needed music that fitted with the genre of horror plus was copyright free.

Tom took the lead on finding the music because he knew of some websites that are copyright free.
In the end, we used one song from "machinimasound.com" and another from "incompetech.com". The two songs worked well with each other once we had finished editing them.

Props

This is a brief list of what we need for our film
  • Car
  • Ketchup
  • Ipod & earphones
  • Suit

Group roles

I was in charge of the camera and that meant that I did most of the filming. It was up to me to make sure that camera was positioned correctly around the shot.

Gareth was chosen to be director. This meant that he was in charge on the days of filming. He was confident that he would be best for this position.

Tom was put as producer, he made sure everything was ready for filming day.
